The fine art SAVOY BLUE is a serie of still lifes with characteristic detail shots and enormous enlargements of a wrinkled dry cabbage leaf. In 2018 the European heat wave and drought was a period of unusually record-breaking temperatures also in the Netherlands. The east of the Netherlands was also affected by drought and the extreme heat was blaimed for crop failures. Through the photographs I investigated what water does and its lack does with crops.
‘The atmosphere with the snow is my memory of the cool winters in Finnish Lapland where I was born.’
I captured the process from the beginning to end with a 50mm macro lens. When making the photo reportage, she zoomed in on the cabbage leaf, but not extreme macro. The interaction of the water on the cabbage leaf is clearly visible, especially if the water has mixed with the blue ink. Most of the images ware taken outside in the bright sun and after this let to evaporate.
‘The blueprints of dried-up ink look like the snow landscapes photographed from the sky.’
